Since its inception, Dr. Milton Trager's work in psycho-physical integration, has incorporated components of Mindfulness, Trauma-informed practices, Non-Violent Communication, a deep understanding of Neuroplasticiy, Epigenetics, Heart-Brain Coherence and even quantum physic’s Observer Effect outcomes. Recent findings in modern science highlight how his work has always intersected these emergent concepts in mind-body integration and explain why there is such lasting neuromuscular change as a result of it. Utilizing gentle touch and movement, The Trager® Approach remains one of the most innovative and effective forms of integrative movement education and bodywork that facilitates lasting release of neuro-muscular holding patterns that manifest as pain and functional limitation.  More than a treatment for the body, a Trager® session is a lesson for the nervous system upon which clients can build a new way of embodiment; of moving effortlessly through life.

TRAGER® LEVEL 1 PROFESSIONAL TRAINING - May 21-23 and 28-30 2021

Weekend 1 of the training will introduce you to Trager’s essential principles, and the projection of feeling-qualities to the unconscious mind, as opposed to mastering techniqueto manipulate tissue.  Weekend 2 of the training will focus deeply on exploration of movement in the body and how to use specific handles in order to create and communicate more ease of movement in the body.  Throughout all of this, we will continue to deepen in our understanding of using the process of inquiry, which is at the core of the Trager® Approach’s efficacy. Self-care movements for the practitioner and ways to instruct clients in self-care will be part of both weekends.

Whether you participate in this training or not, you're welcome to join the Trager Essentials Facebook page.  I'll be offering at least one live-stream session in February and may even post information about additional Zoom chats throughout the month.  Here we'll explore all things healing touch, touch as a language, touch as food, personal vision for 2021, and likely some topics related to frontier science's investigations into epigenetics, neuroplasticty, heart-brain coherence etc.   The group is private so we can openly share.   Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions.   Metta, M

TRAGER ESSENTIALS - ON-LINE - for Manual Therapists and Somatic Professionals 8 CEUs

Shoulder Demo from previous on-line class - Advanced Applications  July 2020.

Through lecture, demonstration, and practice you'll learn:

  • Mentastics® Self-Care Movement exercises to keep you comfortable while you work and which you can teach to your clients so that they may elicit similar muscular changes on their own.
  • How inquiry and a meditative presence transform touch into a language.
  • How to use touch and movement to dialogue with the nervous system to initiate lasting neuromuscular change.
  • The fundamental principles of the Trager®. Approach at the heart of its efficacy.
  • Through a mini-session protocol, we explore how to adapt those principles to your present style of work. This workshop contains vital information for anyone wishing to further understand the connection between mind and body, touch as a language, and in the words of Dr. Milton Trager, "Movement as a Way to Agelessness." This workshop will also follow a format similar to Michael's work in Sri Lanka, which was profiled in AMTA "Massage Therapy Journal" Winter 2007 Quarterly.

Course Description:

Explore the essential principles of Dr. Milton Trager’s Psychophysical Integration and their applications to some of the most common clinical, musculoskeletal pathologies. Through this unique self-care approach founded on a mindful presence and specific body mechanics, you’ll learn to transform touch into a language to dialogue with the nervous system to facilitate lasting neuromuscular change. And you’ll feel great doing it!  This system of dynamic mindful movement, Dr. Trager termed Mentastics® forms the basis for your self-care at the table, the foundation of the hands-on table work and informs the very exercises you can teach to your clients to elicit similar muscular responses on their own.

Applications of Dr. Trager’s work to address Trauma (PTSD) related conditions, sciatica, low back and neck pain, fibromyalgia and conditions like frozen shoulder, upper cross syndrome (text neck) or anterior scalene syndrome will be discussed.

When you finish this course, you will be able to:

  • Perform self-care exercises to relieve, neck, shoulder, low back and hip pain within your own body and to avoid your own pain and burnout utilizing body mechanics at the table.

  • Guide Clients through Self-Care movements to care for themselves and to leverage the gains of the sessions.

  • Describe and apply specific skills required to effectively work with the nervous system as it presents in trauma, sciatica, frozen shoulder and other musculoskeletal conditions to facilitate the release of unconscious holding patterns.

  • Cite research on components of the gamma motor system that may contribute to pain and fatigue associated with Fibromyalgia and other musculoskeletal conditions.

  • Describe the basic neurophysiology of Trauma

  • Describe the components of Non-Violent Communication and how this applies to touch and neuromuscular release

  • Describe what weight tells us about muscular tension or holding.

  • Execute the concept of action at a distance through traction and the creation of fluid movements within the body.

As course summary and examination will be provided for those who are not attending all the sessions in person who wish to receive CE credit for the course.

What you’ll need:

  • Those participating will need two (2) water balloons about 10-12” diameter— we’ll be filling them only part way.

  • A towel.

  • 3-4 Thera bands of various thickness

  • A practice partner, client, person.  For the hands-on portion you’ll need a body to work on.  If you do not have someone to practice on, you will be observing

The Trager® Approach

Developed over 70 years ago by Dr. Milton Trager for the treatment of polio and sciatica, The Trager® Approach remains an innovative approach to movement education and self-care, which facilitates lasting neuro-muscular change.

The Trager® Approach utilizes gentle touch and rhythmic movements to cultivate a state of deep relaxation to release muscle holding patterns residing in the unconscious mind that often manifest as functional limitation, or pain. Self-Care movement exercises are provided so clients may develop their own session "recall" capacity to elicit similar relaxation responses experienced during their session.

Clients often report:

  • Increased mobility, vitality, clarity, capacity to relax and sense of overall peace.
  • Improved sports performance without injury, quickened recover from surgery or injury,
